(Also see our PDF guide to vegan sandwich, baguette and wrap fillings)
The following suggestions are for those prisons that provide sandwiches for their lunch option.
- Peanut Butter
- Peanut Butter and Jam
- Peanut Butter and Salad
- Various Jam or Preserves
- Marmite
- Marmite and Fresh Tomato or Cucumber
- Houmous
- Houmous and Salad
- Houmous and Mustard & Cress
- Houmous and Watercress
- Pitta Bread, Houmous and Salad
Also any combination of the above could be offered.
Please note unless it is the preference of the prisoner all bread used for sandwiches, without exception of the filling, should have a vegan margarine spread initially. Also the choice of wholemeal or white bread should be offered.
Some of the flavoured crisps are suitable for vegans. However, since this would need to be confirmed, as it varies from brand to brand, we recommend plain crisps are made available.
For those prisons who wish to be more inventive, dairy replacement cheeses such as Sheese or Cheezly, and vegan pâtés are available from any health food shop or wholefood supplier.
We also recommend that two pieces of fruit and 1 oz walnuts are supplied in this lunch option.
